HEALTH BENEFITS
Neutering provides several important health benefits for male dogs. The procedure eliminates the risk of testicular cancer, which is a common malignancy in intact males and reduces their risk of developing enlarged prostate glands, known as prostatic hyperplasia. More importantly, neutering sets up your pet for a longer life, as studies have repeatedly shown that neutered dogs and cats live longer, on average, than intact pets.

BEHAVIORAL BENEFITS
Behavioral benefits relate directly to the decreases in certain sex hormones that occur after neutering. Removing a male dog’s testicles reduces their breeding instinct, the desire to roam, and can help with aggression and urine-marking issues.

RISKS
While neutering is a major medical procedure, it is also one of the most common surgeries performed by veterinarians. Like any surgical procedure, sterilization has some risks related to the procedure itself and to anesthesia. Even so, these risks are typically low. Our veterinarians can recommend a surgical plan specially tailored to your pet’s needs. Before the procedure our veterinarians will thoroughly examine your pet to ensure they are in good health.

WHAT IS THE BEST AGE? For canines, most veterinarians recommend neutering between six and nine months of age. In some cases owners may prefer to wait until a dog is fully grown, between one year and two years to neuter them. This allows the dog to fully develop and mature before being neutered, which can positively impact growth and overall health in some breeds (especially giant breed dogs).
For cats, the optimal age for neutering falls between 5 and 6 months. This timing leverages the benefits of early development and quicker recovery times from anesthesia and the procedure itself, as opposed to older animals, which can be more complex.
